Wildland Consultants Ltd has nationally recognised expertise in the evaluation and rankings of natural areas, with experience in this area extending back to the early 1980s. Recent experience includes the development of a criteria set for the Canterbury RPS (with a particular focus on wetlands) and an associated guideline for application of the criteria set.
Evidence has also been presented on a wetland criteria set for the West Coast. Other experience includes reviews of significance assessment criteria for the Ministry of the Environment and Waikato Regional Council. The latter project included a field trial evaluation. A guide for the application of Regional Policy Statement natural heritage criteria has been produced for Waikato Regional Council. Advice on assessment criteria has been provided to many district and regional councils, resulting in major contributions to criteria sets included in operative plans and Regional Policy Statements.
Evaluation criteria have also been applied in relation to many proposed developments throughout New Zealand, including major roading, wind farms, and other major infrastructure. A ranking system developed by staff has been used as the basis for national plans for the control of goats, possums and weeds, and this system has also been applied widely on a regional basis in New Zealand.
