Wildlands are seeking fulltime permanent Ecological Restoration Field Team members for our Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua and Christchurch branches. These roles are to undertake ecological restoration works which includes pest plant control, planting and pest animal control.
It is essential that you have a willingness to contribute and work in a team, are physically fit, and have a passion for working outdoors in all sorts of weather. The work involves the use of agrichemicals (herbicides), animal toxins (poisons), and traps on a regular basis. Some work may involve staying away in remote areas in basic accommodation.

Ecological Restoration Team Leader - Rotorua

We are seeking a fulltime permanent Team Leader position at Wildlands Rotorua. This role is to lead small teams (2-6 staff) in the field undertaking ecological restoration works which includes pest plant control, planting, and pest animal control.
A professional Team Leader with a minimum of three years’ experience is required. This role involves leading a team on ecological restoration sites throughout the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions. You will be regularly working away on jobs and staying in basic accommodation including, but not limited to back country huts, shearers quarters, and campgrounds/caravan parks. The work requires staff to use agrichemicals (herbicides), and vertebrate toxins (poisons) in a safe manner.

Ecological Restoration Supervisor - Christchurch

It is essential that you have at least 2-3 years’ experience as a Restoration Field Team Leader or similar, or are currently supervising ecological restoration works. It is also essential that you are able to communicate effectively to staff and clients, work efficiently, and have excellent planning and problem-solving skills. This role is approximately 50% office and 50% field based. It requires visits to prospective and ongoing ecological restoration sites throughout Canterbury, quoting for new work, auditing, monitoring, and on the ground supervision/mentoring of restoration teams carrying out physical works, through working alongside and leading by example. The work will also require the use of agrichemicals (herbicides), pest animal toxins (poisons), and traps from time to time while working alongside the restoration team in a mentoring role.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- A conservation qualification - graduate or post graduate in horticultural, ecology, environmental or earth sciences.
- A genuine interest in working in the outdoors and achieving restoration goals.
- Thorough knowledge and experience of native planting, pest plant and animal monitoring and control.
- Thorough knowledge and experience in project quoting, implementation and reporting.
- Thorough knowledge and experience in mentoring and training existing and new staff.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Decision making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- A good work ethic, efficient and H&S conscious.
- Report writing and computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel and GPS/mapping software).
- Photography and handheld devices (tablets, GPS).
- A good level of fitness, as the role will require field work and site visits in a range of environments and terrain.
- Full NZ drivers’ licence (and able to drive manual).
Preferred applicants should also hold CURRENT relevant qualifications and experience such as Growsafe (Standard or Registered Chemical Applicator), First Aid, Sitesafe (or similar), Chainsaw, 4WD, and Control Substances Licence (CSL). A clean full driver’s licence for manual vehicles is essential.

Field Ecologist and Team Leader - Southland
Invercargill
An exciting opportunity has come up with Wildland Consultants to join our nationwide team of dedicated and specialist ecologists, to be based in Invercargill, Southland. As part of this role, you will be collecting ecological information primarily from the best forest and wetland sites in a number of locations across the region, from Bluff to Northern Fiordland, on private and public land. Invercargill will be your base (although we are able to be flexible on this for the right candidates). You will be expected to work long days in the field at times. The work will be a mixture of field and office based throughout the year with office reporting on fieldwork required regularly within an 8-week period. Experience working in the field and plant identification skills are a must for this role.
We have established a new team and base in Invercargill and are looking for another Field Ecologist (with good plant identification skills) and an Ecologist Team Leader to join the team. Training and support will be provided as required.
Start date will be as soon as possible.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:
- A qualification in ecology/botany, or equivalent experience.
- Good knowledge and experience of New Zealand vegetation and identification skills.
- Able to demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise health and safety and make good decisions in the field.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team.
- Be prepared to work remotely and on own.
- Full current New Zealand driving licence.
DESRIABLE SKILLS AND EXPERENCE:
- Current Outdoor First Aid certificate.
- Training and experience with 4WD.
- Good knowledge and experience of any specialist areas of ecology may be an advantage.
- Ability to identify birds or other indigenous fauna species an advantage.
- Skills and experience working off track in the backcountry.
- Ability to navigate with a GPS and compass.
- Experience liaising with landowners.
The ideal applicant for the field ecologist role will possess the skills and experience listed above, although there will be training and support provided.
The team leader role requires similar skills and experience, additionally they will have strong leadership experience as well as strong interpersonal and organisational skills. The Team Leader will oversee the project in Invercargill, making work plans and ensure staff are working efficiently and safely, and will also undertake field work and reporting
